To size an off-grid system, you must determine the daily consumption and the peak load that you want to be able to carry. Peak load determines the size inverter you need, and daily consumption determines the size battery plant you need. Both of those are taken into consideration in sizing the solar panel array.
There are a variety of “size you solar system” articles on the internet, and some of them were written by people who have a clue what they are doing and some are not. You don’t mention where you are located. Many states and provinces nowadays have Solar Energy Centers that provide this kind of information specifically for people in your area.
At most of these you can talk to expert consultants who can give you specific advice. Also, the US Department of Energy has information web sites that can help.
You will need to buy solar photovoltaic panels, a charge controller, batteries, an inverter, load centers, and one or more auxilliary generators. It will take 15 to 25 years to recover the cost of all this, as compared to an ordinary electric bill. So it’s not an economical proposition. You do it for the feeling of independence and the sense of being competent.
When I retired, I built a 2,000 sq. ft. passive solar house and installed a complete solar electric system based on the principles of source flexibility and independence. You can do the same.
The loads for which I built my system included lights, electronics, exhaust fans, heat circulating pumps, and a low-current refrigerator. I bought a Sun Frost refrigerator that uses about as much power over a 24-hour period as a 40 watt light bulb. These machines are expensive, but they work very well. Form the habit of never leaving the refrigerator door standing open. A conventional refrigerator consumes 5-8 times as much power.
My house is passive solar and it opens up to absorb heat from the sun in cold weather, but also closes down to be well-shaded on the south side in hot weather. It has a concrete slab floor with embedded tubing to heat the concrete in winter and cool it in summer. Thus the air conditioning load is very light, and I only need the electric air conditioners in 95 degree and hotter weather.
A solar panel system to power large loads such as shop tools, air conditioners, an electric water heater or electric dryer would be prohibitively expensive.
So I make a compromise. I can live without air conditioners because of the way my house is made. So they are hooked up directly to the utility mains. If the power goes off or I can’t afford to pay the bill, I do without. Same for the washing machine and dryer. In a pinch I could wash clothes in the sink and dry them on a clothesline.
But I really need my lights, my computer, my music and TV system and so on. So I sized the system to power those, and left the air conditioners off. If I have plenty of money for the Electric bill, I can run the air when I want to.
So that’s the way you think about it. My system is built around a 2500 watt Trace inverter that will automatically switch to utility power or backup generator if the batteries get low. I have 11 KW of solar panels and a battery plant that stores 5 days of peak load.
You need to do some research to work these things out. It’s quite feasible and has many practical advantages, though an economist will tell you it’s a losing proposition. But I love explaining the system to dinner guests. All the equipment is in a little room that looks like the control room of a submarine.
Run an internet search on “sizing solar electric system” and check with your state or provincial government (like Dept. of Commerce) to see if you have a consulting center at the state/provincial level.
