Bridge Fishing in the Florida Keys
For last minute visitor who has no intention of boating due to lack of time or money, sea sickness, fear of sunburn,or other obligations, fishing from the shore or a bridge is just for you! Grouper, snapper, sheepshead, permit, and even tarpon can be caught from the Florida keys bridges.
More than two dozen bridges accommodate fishers and sightseeers alike. While some people fish, others watch pelicans, egrets, seagulls and osprey feed and preen just a few feet away,And it can be exciteing when the person next to you hooks up with a silver king and the tarpon races in and around the bridge.
Fishing from shore or wadeing with lures or bait can bring similar excitement-you might land a spectactular bonefish or a toothy and tough barracuda.
Fishing from a Florida Keys Bridge is also a great way to get a panoramic view of the keys, relaxing and catching supper.
The tackle used for keys bridge fishing should be on the heavy side, remember this is a place you can catch a one pound snapper,or a 10 foot Hammerhead. So adjust your set-up’s accordingly.
For bait, fresh shrimp is always good, all the tackle shops have plenty of shrimp. The best way, I have found to keep them alive, with-out the hassle of maintaining your bait bucket, is to layer them in newspaper and put them on ice, works great!
If the small fish, keep “stealing your bait”, move around a little. The fishing areas they have set-up here are massive, you have nearly 100 miles to fish, from Key Largo to Key West.
The middle of the day is usually preaty warm and sunny,so early in the morning or at dusk or night time is a good time to fish,if you do fish dureing the day prepare. The sun beating of the concrete bridge is intense.
Either way you will enjoy. My wife and I have been driveing down to our place in Ram Rod Key from New England for over 20 yrs. , and the beauty of the Keys still brings tears to our eyes
