As a Canadian, is it a bad idea (financially) to go to college/university in the United States?
I hear that there are large price differences and that schooling is much cheaper in Canada. What price differences am I potentially looking at? Are there other places I could consider going that might be cheaper? Essentially, I just want to travel while going to school.
(I want to go to school for photography and have been looking at schools like RIT and Brooks, which seem to be on the higher-costing scale, but worthwhile.)
Well both my parents were born and raised in Canada, and my dad came to America, lived here for one year, and went to college here. My mom went to college in Canada, and then traveled throughout Europe and eventually came here.
The reason I told you that is because the financial difference is pretty big, and there’s ways to work around everything, like my parents did. Canadian schools cost lower in general, but you’re not a resident in the state college you’ll be going to (don’t even get me started on private school colleges) and it costs extra and is actually harder to get into a school if you’re not a resident. If you really want to go to a school in the USA, take a year off and live in America for a year so you gain residency.
I see that you’re main reason for wanting an American school is for traveling, my mom did too. She decided to put up with the Canadian schools, and travel after she finished school.
One of those choices would be your best bet.
