Casting Fly
Casting Fly

what is some great advice for fly fishing?
casting, fly types, making flys etc.
A good fly fisherman is knowledgeable about the environment in which he does his fishing. Before getting into the technique, research the area where you will be fishing and the fish that live there. Important things to know are:
- What type of bugs are present in the water, and what season they are found in.
- General size of the body of water in which you will be fishing, and how seasons effect its water levels
- The conditions around the edge of your body of water.
- Which fish are found in this area, and what their seasonal behaviors are.
With these couple of preliminary facts, you can begin selecting your equipment. If you are crafting your own flies, be sure to try and emulate each type of insect found around the water in your area, as well as each stage of life for a particular species. You can never be completely sure what insects the fish are feeding on until you do some checking around your fishing spot right before you begin fishing, so be sure to tie yourself a good range of flies so you have an arsenal to pick from. Try and mix it up a little so that you are sure to be well-prepared.
The typical “dry” fly is tied by wrapping colored thread around the shank of a hook, and securing various (usually natural) materials as you go. The body of the insect is usually made by repeatedly wrapping the thread to create thickness and the desired color pattern, though there are some “fuzzy-bodied” insects out there – for these, I use cotton fuzz rolled with wax. The wings are typically created with feathers – or more specifically, individual fibers cut from the feather in the desired width and length. The fly is finished off with water-resistant coating, to prevent the threads from unraveling. A dry fly is usually very small, and mocks a flying insect that has landed on the surface of the water.
Conversely, a “wet” fly is usually used to imitate a water-going insect (the larva of many flying insects go through an aquatic phase of life) and is larger. A more sizable hook is used during creation to help it sink slightly, and wings are usually not created. I have sometimes used metallic threads in my wet flies to help them sink a little more, and to create a glittering effect in the water. You do not fish a wet fly with the same technique of a dry fly, I usually leave it in the water and don’t re-cast multiple times.
Just as important for a fly-fisherman is his ability to approach a body of water quietly and unseen by his prey. Trout have extremely good eyesight, and are very easily frightened away by an approaching person. You will have to scout the river or lake, and find a point at which you can enter the water quietly and with some cover. If you spot fish, try to move upstream from them and fish slowly towards their location. If you can approach the fish from behind, they will not be able to see you at all, and you can cast directly in front of them to present your fly.
Fly fishing is a relaxing past time and crafting your own flies is as rewarding as catching a huge trout. You will want to pick up a kit for fly crafting if you don’t have one. You’ll want some small hooks, a good assortment of materials to craft with, a few colors of thread, a spool-holder for your thread, some tiny scissors or an x-acto, a good work desk with a fly-tying vise, some hobby or “head” cement, and a pair of hemostat pliers (these are the most useful tool a fishman can carry, hands down…buy spares). You can find a beginner’s kit at most retailers who carry fly-tying supplies, or you can order one online if you find a supplier.
After having gotten your gear squared away, you can begin working on your technique. I’d recommend worrying about the tackle part first, and then checking out some info on how to cast and present a fly correctly. Good luck!
