Does anyone know much about Cabela’s brand fly rods?
I’m looking into getting one of their rod and reel combos soon, and I’m kind of weary of their quality, reliability, and so on. I don’t know which specific model I’d get, but if you know anything about them, or have heard anything from other fly anglers, what is it?
I use a rod with a foam cork that I paid $30 on eBay and a Eddington $20 real from Cabela’s. A couple of weeks ago I went Fly fishing with a lady-friend who had a $300+ Cabela’s rod and reel.
As I was using her fly rod to show her some pointers about fly casting I learned one thing, I can cast my $50 rod and reel just as good as a Cabela’s $300+ rod and reel. Perhaps I got lucky and got a great deal on that rod eBay. Perhaps my $20 rod isn’t the best but if I were to brake it, or lose it, or get it stolen I’m only out but $20 not $300.
I wouldn’t worry about the name so much as the quality and the action. Look at the quality of the guides and the tiptop. Look how the ferules connect and stay tight and not slip. The reel seat should be solid. lookl at the cork ghandle and see if it confortable in your hand. Find the balance point with the reel and line on it. Is it above the cork or at the cork. Find the spine of the rod abnd make sure its on the opposite side of the guides.
To locate the spine put the rod sections together. Place the tip area of the assembled blank in the cradle between the thumb and other fingers of the right hand. Tilt the blank to about a 45 degree angle. Place the left hand about mid way down the blank (just above the left hand should be a piece of masking tape to mark the spine when found). Push down slightly with the left hand and rotate the blank using the thumb and forefinger. Where the most resistance is felt is the spine.
If your really concerned, it might be best to try casting with it. You’ll need to try it with line leader and some sort of fly on it to get a good test.
Some of the better flyshops would let you do this. There is a good chance Cabbelas would too.
