My Horse Got Hives From Fly Spray?

When I was at the barn today I put some new fly spray on my horse [[ I decided to get some fly spray that was more natural ]] and about a half hour later I noticed that he had a mild case of hives in the saddle area. Could fly spray cause hives? Or do you thing it is more likely that something else caused them? Thanks.

The fly spray more than likely has one or two ingredients to which your horse is sensitive. If this is a new spray, and you’ve used another one successfully in the past, I’d switch back (after the hives clear, so as not to further irritate them) and see if that caused any adverse reaction. If it doesn’t, I’d say to avoid the new spray and stick to the one you know won’t irritate him.

And to granny, horses and riders are plagued by flies during the summer season, sometimes to such an extent to inflict harm rather than just be a pest. Fly sprays are used mainly to keep flies away for the comfort of not only the horse, but also the rider. Flies can cause skin irritation that can lead to a number of other problems, so many people opt to use fly sprays, masks, and sheets to prevent such things as sores and discharge.
