what is the most effective way to attach hooks/weight to your fishing line for trout fishing?
I tend to fish for trout in streams and moving water, and prefer to use small spinners and lures. When I rig up for bait I like to use the red Gamakatsu egg hooks for Salmon eggs and either size12 or 14, depending on the size of the eggs. For other baits such a worm a size 8-10 bait holder usually works well, again try to match the hook to the bait. Use a split shot, pinched on about 12-18″ above the hook.
If I am fishing in still water I rig with a sliding egg sinker, but I have been using a Carolina Keeper between the sinker and the hook. This device is nothing more than a round piece of plastic, with a small slit in the center. You squeeze it and it opens to allow you to put the line through, then closes down on the line to hold and keep the sinker where you want it. The advantage of this is that there is no additional weight, it is adjustable without having to tie on another leader to change depth, does not seem to get hung up as much, and you only have one knot instead of three. I don’t like to use leaders so this works very well for me. I don’t recommend this when using sinkers over 1/2 oz, then it’s best use the swivel and a leader as suggested, as the heavier weights will cause the keeper to move.
As to the question of knots use which ever one you can tie the best and are comfortable with. The two knots that you should learn are the Improved clinch, and the Palomar. My personal favorite for this type of fishing with light line is the clinch. First knot I learned. I do like the Palomar for heavier lines, say 20#+. The line I normally use is 4# Green Maxima, again just a personal preference They also make this in a 3# and 5#, the 3# is really nice to use. (Not trying to start a line war) Hope this helps.
