Nymph Fly
(fly fishers) what do you like best? dry flies, nymphs, others?
Personally, I like fishing with a dry fly. Whenever I go out, I wish, hope, and pray that there are some insects on the water and that the fish are taking them. I would probably catch more fish if I was more circumspect and fished whatever the fish were eating, but sometimes when I see insects on the water I just forget that nymphing even exists. There’s something just exciting about seeing that take on the water’s surface and then setting the hook with just the right speed and tension. Gets me every time.
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not above fishing nymphs, and I quite like fishing a larger dry fly, like an attractor, with some kind of nymph or wet fly dropper. It’s very satisfying to rig up a dry/dropper combo and end up catching fish alternatively on one fly and then the other. (I’ve never caught to fish at the same time this way, but I’ve heard others say they have.)
If I can’t catch anything with dries I will switch to an emerger or a nymph or wet fly that floats just under the surface — sometimes it’s just as fun as a dry, and it’s usually more effective than dry flies. Fish that are taking aquatic insects off the surface are typically also taking even more from the subsurface film.
Unfortunately, nymphing is my last resort — if I can’t make anything happen on or near the surface, I’ll get the nymphs out. This is a terrible philosophy, of course, because some huge percentage of a fish’s forage comes from underwater, so that’s where I should be fishing preferentially. And I do have fun nymphing — I don’t hate it. I’m just partial to that classical scene of the BWO or PMD on a perfect drift over a rising trout and then SLURP, ZING, and it’s on.
As for “others,” I can tell you that I do not like fishing large flies. Here on my home river we recently fished a big salmonfly hatch — these insects can be nearly 3 inches long, and the fish gorge on them. Of course, the salmonfly nymph and dry flies are fished, and of course they are the same size as the natural. While the salmonfly hatch this year was decent, I always hate having to toss those big flies around, and I hate even worse having to hook smaller fish (less than 10 inches) with number 6 hooks.
