Brand new swimbait setup?
I’m new to swimbaits, so I’ve only used small 2 oz and lower ones on my bass rod. But now I want to use bigger ones and plan on using an Okuma guide select swimbait rod (2 oz-10oz) and an abu c4. Do you think it’s a good setup?
Okuma’s are not all “low-quality”. Okuma actually has a few nice reels out there, not sure on the rods. It should do fine for you, but if you had enough I’d go with a Shimano, St. Croix, G. Loomis (a little expensive ;D), or anything that has a good reputation. I don’t see Okuma having a good reputation “yet”. If they start coming out with a fresh new line-up of quality products I could see it in the future.
The C4 is a good reel, some says the drags are weak (although lots of large Catfish and other species are caught on their 14lb drags) but with a simple drag-change that will fix your problem. There’s some drag washers you can get for cheap (under $20 most of the time) that will run your drag up to 22lbs. I don’t necessarily think you’d need that much for Bass fishing, but if you’d like it then get it.
