A patrol plane can carry fuel for 8h flying time, and can fly at 300km/h in still air. It’s outbound patrol is against a 30km/h tailwind. How far can it fly against the head wind and return safety?

1) The plane can go in still air for 8 hours at 300 km/h, thus it can go for 2400 km in still air.
2) At 270 km/hour (against wind) it can go for 270*x km, x beeing the time in hours it flies against the wind
3) At 330 km/ hours (with the wind) it can go for 330*y km, y beeing the time it flies with the wind.

Since both ways must be equally long it follows that
270 x = 330 y

And the planes engine can run for 8 hours, so

x + y = 8 —–> y = 8 – x —–> you insert this into the first equation:

270 x = 330* ( 8 – x) —–> you solve for x:
270 x = 330*8 – 330 x
x = 4.4 hours
and
y = 8 – 4.4 = 3.6 hours

and 4.4*270 , or 3.6*330 = 1188 km can the plane go either way
