What kind of bird was it and should it be in Tucson?
Yesterday my family and I saw some kind of bird sitting next to our chimney, and none of us could figure out what it was, but it sort of reminded us of a pheasant.
It was a little bigger than a pigeon, and had a black stripe going from each eye to the middle of the front of its neck. Inside the stripes was white, but the rest of the bird was gray, with black and white patterns on the wings. Also, it sort of sounded like a chicken, only instead of periodic clucks it would go on a string of notes a little bit like a kukaburra might.
Anybody know what it was? I’ve never seen any like it in Tucson, AZ.

The chicken-like voice would make sense because chukars are close relatives (they belong to the same family as grouse, pheasants and partridges). Although this species is not native to North America, it’s been introduced as a game species and according to the Animal Diversity Web, currently “successful populations have established themselves in mountainous, rocky, arid areas throughout the western states and the current distribution is centered around the Great Basin area, including Nevada, western Utah, southwestern Idaho, northeastern California, and southeastern Oregon”.
