When there is snow on the ground is it a good time for rainbow trout?
I am on spring break and all I am getting is snow, when there is snow outside and cold is it a good time to fish for rainbow trout??? If so what should I use as bait (not lures)?
It would be good to know where you are located, but I can tell you that here in the western U.S. you can catch rainbows any time of year. So, YES, you can catch rainbows while there is snow on the ground. I fish all through the winter and I’ve hooked rainbows under almost every condition imaginable — hot, cold, light, dark, etc.
I fly fish, so I don’t use bait, but I know you can catch rainbows on worms anytime, anywhere. I saw some people on my home river catching trout with worms just a couple weeks ago (still snowy here). Grubs or mealworms also work. On a river, fish a worm or grub down low — use just a small piece slipped over your hook like a sock on a foot. Put some splitshot on your line or leader and let it bump along the bottom. Use a bobber to detect takes. If you’re fishing still water, use a bobber at various depths until you start getting takes. Lay the worm on the bottom if you have to.
I’ve never really got into the different kinds of Powerbait, but I talk to anglers every year who swear by it. There are also people where I live who use hamburger and sausage on treble hooks, and this seems to attract the stocked rainbows in the ponds and dams hereabouts, though I don’t know if that catches wild fish (the stocked fish are always so much easier to catch with bait, seems like). The hamburger falls off (or gets pecked off) the hook eventually, so this would work best in still water, not so good in streams or rivers.
I will say that this is not the best time for salmon eggs, though you might as well take some along if you’re baitfishing. Rainbows and most other trout spawn in the fall or winter. Trout are not going to be seeing many free-floating eggs in the water right now, so if you present an egg it will likely get ignored. Like I said, though, take them along as a backup.
