To defeat him…., from the beginning of the level, you need to collect every golden ? coin you see. The first will generate another, and then another, and so on. In order to get them, you need to time your ascensions on those spinning flowers very carefully. Stay calm while floating, and hold still: when the controller starts to rumble, THAT’S when you should shake to ascend again. That way you’ll get maximum height and distance and get all the coins easily.
Eventually, you’ll acquire a Rainbow Star, which makes Mario temporarily invincible. While you’re invincible, destroy the Golden Chomp and grab the Star.
