Fly tying question would a nice fly tying kit be a good gift for some one who is uptight in his life?
I would enjoy teaching him the basics of tying flies if I kmew he would enjoy it. He iis pretty bored and needs a hobby.
Gee, I dunno about this, Granny. You take someone who you say is “uptight,” put him in front of this weird little vice with these incomprehensible tools, and tell him to put together odd little feathery things that supposedly catch fish. He’s squinting and tilting his head through his magnifying specs, and getting a headache trying to remember all the terms and materials and insects… I dunno. Doesn’t exactly sound like a cure for uptightness, to me. About the fifth time that hackle breaks off in the pliers and the whole fly unravels, or about the third time he comes to the end of a Hare’s Ear and realizes he forgot to tie in the gold wire, he’ll probably be ready to go back to being bored.
Kidding aside, I think fly tying is a great hobby. There is a bit of a learning curve, but you don’t necessarily have to learn everything at once and you can go on learning for decades. If this fellow is a fly angler, then of course he needs to tie his own — nothing like catching a fish on one of your own. Once you have the basics down, it can be quite relaxing and it actually would be a decent cure for boredom and uptightness. But be careful — if your friend is one of these types to throw himself into new interests, you may never see him again. Fly fishing and tying both can be very addictive and it can make some people get lost in them. Sometimes I sit down to tie a few flies and I’ll open a book for new patterns or I’ll start experimenting with some new idea and the next thing I know it’s 3 a.m.
